BUTLER CO., AL (WSFA) -

A high speed chase through Butler County ended with the suspect crashing into an Alabama State Trooper patrol car. The crash happened on the southbound off-ramp of Interstate 65 at mile marker 114.

Alabama State Troopers said the chase started around 12:15pm when its post in Evergreen was contacted by a motorist traveling north along the interstate. The motorist reported that a gray truck was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed.

Troopers initiated a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull to the side of the road. The truck continued north, running other vehicles off the road and striking two Greenville Police Department patrol cars and an Alabama State Trooper patrol car.

DPS Public Information Officer Trooper Kevin Cook told WSFA 12 News that the driver attempted to run over another trooper at Exit 114 and crashed into the officer's marked patrol car.

The suspect was injured in the crash and subsequently taken by medical helicopter to Baptist Medical Center South in Pensacola, Fl. for treatment. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Commuter Patrick Berg and several friends were traveling north on I-65 when they heard the police sirens. As they pulled over to the emergency lane, one passenger reached for a cell phone, capturing video of the suspect as he sped past, followed by several police cars. One passenger noted that the suspect was on his cell phone as he passed.

A short time later, the suspect apparently crossed the median and headed in the opposite direction, once again passing Berg's automobile. The man was said to have been smoking a cigarette on the second recorded clip Berg provided to WSFA 12 News.

The reason for the man's decision to flee from police is not immediately known. Troopers continue to investigate.

Check back shortly for additional updates.
