MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Alabama State Troopers investigated a total of six fatal traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday travel period, a time frame from 6pm Friday, Aug. 31, to midnight Monday, Sept. 3.
The six crashes resulted in six deaths.
Based on a preliminary investigation, at least three of the fatal crashes involved alcohol.
Troopers say seat belts were available, but not in use, for three of the individuals killed.
The other fatal crashes involved a pedestrian, a motorcycle and an ATV.
The 2012 period was the same length of time (78 hours) as the 2011 period, but this year saw half as many fatalities. The 2011 Labor Day holiday traveling period resulted in 12 fatalities.
The crashes occurred in Butler, Cherokee, Coffee, Jefferson, Marengo, and Mobile counties.
