MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The final Second Saturday Riverfront Festival is set for tomorrow. With bands, food and arts and crafts vendors, there is something for every member of the family to enjoy, free of charge.
Second Saturday kicks off at 5 p.m. Live acts including Reckless and the Goat Hill Strings Band will be performing. There will be plenty of food vendors from Montgomery restaurants, arts and crafts vendors and inflatables for the kids. There is a $10 charge for a wristband for the inflatables. The festivities will wrap up with a fireworks show after the Biscuits game.
The newest addition to the riverfront, the Sandbar, opened up on the first Second Saturday and they credit this event to helping them get the word out.
Sean Sugrue, General Manager of the Sandbar says, "there are a lot of folks who've lived in Montgomery for years who either forgot this was down here or didn't realize that it was as developed as it was. It really helped gain some visibility for not only us, but for the Harriott II and also the amphitheater when concerts are going on too."
In addition to being able to offer free family fun, organizers say they're most proud of the fact that these events have introduced new people to the Riverfront who never knew what was there, including those who live in Montgomery as well as visitors who are staying at the downtown hotels.
Denise Welch with Riverfront Facilities says, "we have shown people that there is really is a lot to do. People always say there's nothing to do. There really is and we've provided that. And not only that, we've also provided people and shown people what downtown Montgomery has to offer."
Organizers say that except for the rain they dealt with at a couple of festivals, the event has been a huge success. And they are so happy with the way things went this year that they plan to continue it next year. It will start back on the second Saturday of the month in April 2013.
