BIBB COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
Eight state inmates in the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent have been transferred to Donaldson Correctional Facility in Jefferson County. A spokesman says it's because of the alleged role they played in a disturbance there around 5:45 p.m. Monday.
Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett would not call the disturbance a riot. He tells Fox6 News the trouble started when an inmate from one of the behavioral modification dorms disobeyed a direct order from a corrections officer and became belligerent in the area where inmates are fed.
The disturbance spread into a dorm, which led to an altercation in the mess hall where several minor injuries to staff and inmates were reported. Two corrections department special response teams were called in to quell the disturbance.
The incident involved inmates housed in the prison's behavioral modification dorms, the area of the prison that holds inmates with discipline problems. Those two dorms remain on lockdown today. All eight inmates were transferred to Donaldson.
The website for the Alabama Department of Corrections says Donaldson "specializes in controlling repeat and/or multiple violent offenders with lengthy sentences that are behaviorally difficult to manage, and several hundred inmates sentenced to life without parole. In addition, Donaldson has a death row with a capacity for 24 inmates that need to be incarcerated in the Birmingham judicial area."
The Bibb County Correctional Facility currently houses 1,900 inmates.
