Graphic billboards have a simple message: Don't race the train - WSFA.com: News Weather and Sports for Montgomery, AL.

One transportation company is using graphic PSAs to get the message out that your vehicle is simply no match against a 12 million pound train.

Billboards like one in Leeds show someone lying in a morgue and it's attention grabbing. It reads: I raced a train and all I got was this lousy toe tag. It's part of Norfolk Southern's "Train Your Brain" campaign which highlights the deadly consequences of being careless at railroad crossings.

"Its a reality check right there," business owner Gene Martin said.

The billboard is right outside his business and he says it's a message sorely needed in Leeds where there are several railroad crossings.

"If there is a train coming normally you see some fool go through [the crossing]," Martin said.

Another billboard in Birmingham reads, "All I got was this lousy arm," and shows a person fitted with a prosthetic limb. 

Richard Harris with Norfolk Southern says the company is focusing its efforts in Alabama because it has a lot of freight and Amtrack traffic. There were 43 crashes, five deaths and 23 injuries last year. Two of those deaths happened in Bessemer at the crossing on 20th Street.

"They hit home because these are very real consequences of racing a train at crossing or ignoring signals at crossings," Harris said.

Accidents at crossings continue to be an issue this year. According to data collected through June 30, 2012, there have been 41 crashes and 11 injuries but thankfully no fatalities.
