Auburn University's athletics department is pledging $1.5 million for the university's new band facility.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports (http://bit.ly/PdFrdI) that one phase of the roughly $10 million project has already been completed. Fund-raising is continuing for the second phase of the 32,500-square-foot facility.

Jay Jacobs, Auburn's director of athletics, said the marching band is an integral part of "the pageantry and fabric of our game day experience."

Rick Good, Auburn's director of bands, said the new facility will offer much-needed indoor rehearsal areas.

The facility was approved by the Auburn University Board of Trustees in 2010. It will include rehearsal areas, office space, an archive gallery and a music library.
