TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
Two Cottondale teenagers have been charged with assault for allegedly throwing a brick off of an overpass that struck and injured a woman driving below.
Tuscaloosa authorities say the five pound brick was thrown off the Keene's Mill Road bridge over I-20/59 near mile marker 81 on Sunday, Sept. 16 around 9 p.m. The brick landed on a car, crashed through the windshield and seriously injured the 40-year-old female driver who was driving with her three children south on I-20/59.
Captain Loyd Baker with Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit says the brick struck the woman's chest and neck. The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries, Baker said. As of 4 p.m. Monday, the woman was still at DCH.
Baker says a tractor trailer was also hit by debris at the same time the brick was thrown. Another vehicle got a flat tire after running over a piece of the brick, Baker said. No other injuries were reported.
Monday, the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit charged two teenagers as adults with first degree assault in connection to the case.
The suspects have been identified as Jordan Isaiah Price, 16, and Shane Adam Herren, 16, both of Cottondale. They were arrested at Herren's home around 3:30 p.m. and are being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $30,000 bonds each.
