COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
Mold can be a health hazard to many people, but there are ways to spot it and prevent it.
Mold is everywhere and when it gets out of control big problems can follow.
Al Gaston, who is the President of Steamatic Total Cleaning and Restoration, said a leaking washer can be a breeding ground for mold.
He said, "It may feel dry to the touch but behind it, it could still be damp. Now you have something going on behind the wall you can not see and if it goes unchecked for several weeks it may be a very expensive problem to remediate."
General manager Chris Osia explained that mold needs a few things to grow.
He said, "You have to have a food source. You have to have something for them to eat. It's just like any other plant and you also have to have moisture."
Mold growth needs the right temperature as well.
Osia said, with high humidity more moisture develops and some types of mold can take over an area in days.
He said, "Black mold is usually what everybody is referring to is stachybotrys. It's an irritant and it's one of those we were talking about. It's a fast growing mold."
Depending on the type of mold and how much there is to cleanup, it can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Jonathan Gore works with the crew at Steamatic and said the first thing workers do is contain the mold.
Next, they get air scrubbers to capture it.
Then with the help of an industrial hygienist and plenty of tests, they are able to identify the mold and give you a possible solution for the mess.
So check your house thoroughly so mold doesn't take over your home and possibly your health.
Also, before you spend any money on cleaning the mold do research, but never browse web sites that are trying to sell you a product.
Avoid companies who do their own testing or use scare tactics as well.
