Father-daughter dance violates RI state law

MOORE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As Tracy Nutt sat on her couch in Moore, she really didn't need to flip through her book of etiquette, she already knows a lot about sitting up straight and good table manners.

"I teach from kindergarten all the way through 12th-grade etiquette and ballroom dancing," Nutt said.

She's the director of the National League of Junior Cotillions in Spartanburg.

"It's a great bonding experience and just something fun for them to do together," Nutt said.

Through the years, she's witnessed many father-daughter and mother-son dances. However, a superintendent at a school district in Rhode Island banned those kind of dances.

According to reports, a single mother from Rhode Island complained the father-daughter dance was discrimination because her daughter didn't have a father.

"Even if it's not a father or mother, it could be another great, strong male role model that can fill in," Nutt said.

The school activities were set up for girls to go the dance and boys to attend a baseball game. But, members with the Rhode Island ACLU joined the fight. They said they are concerned about sex discrimination when these type of activities are planned. They said not all boys want to attend baseball games and not all girls want to go to a dance.

"This type of gender stereotyping only perpetuates outdated notions of 'girl' and 'boy' activities and is contrary to federal law," Executive Director with Rhode Island ACLU Steve Brown said.

But Nutt said dance events are family bonding moments.

"It's another way to make memories," Nutt said.

She said in the Rhode Island case, the ban hurt the children the most.

"We have to always continually fight for the freedoms that we have today," Nutt said.
