Birmingham Police Officer Charles Robert "Rob" Bennett was remembered on Monday for his dedicated service to others as hundreds of fellow officers attended his funeral.
Several hundred uniformed and plain clothes officers from across Alabama and neighboring states attended the services at First Baptist Church in Gardendale. The flag-draped casket was at the front of the sanctuary and pictures of Bennett were shown on two big screens. Bennett, who was 33, was shot to death Thursday along with Officers Harley Chisholm the Third and Carlos Owen as they arrived in an Ensley neighborhood to serve a misdemeanor domestic violence warrant.
Funeral services were also be held on Monday at Clear Branch United Methodist Church for Officer Owen and Tuesday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Moody for Chisholm.
Meanwhile, two men charged in the triple homicide, 27-year-old Nathaniel Woods and 24-year-old Kerry Marquise Spencer will made their first court appearance Monday afternoon. The two were arrested and charged with capital murder in the killings, the third in a year in Alabama in which two or more officers were gunned down.
