MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The following is a news release from the Montgomery Police Department:

The Montgomery Police Department has made an arrest in the Thursday evening shooting death of 44-year-old Claude Brassell and the attempted homicide of a second man.

MPD detectives charged Michael Cottrell, 21, with one count each of murder and attempted murder. Following his arrest late Thursday, he was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was being held under bonds totaling $120,000.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, at about 5:45 p.m. Montgomery Police and Fire Medics responded to a report of subjects shot in the 3300 block of Fountain Lane. There, officers found Brassell and a second man, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Baptist Medical Center South, where Brassell later was pronounced dead. The second victim is listed in stable condition.

The initial investigation indicates an argument between several males resulted in gunfire. Upon further investigation, MPD developed information that identified Cottrell in connection with the shootings.

Brassell's death is Montgomery's 21st homicide of the year. No additional information is available for release relative to this ongoing investigation.

Note:  A criminal charge is an accusation. The defendants are assumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
