HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Joe Bagwell, a Huntsville native and a student assistant on Auburn's football team, died unexpectedly before Saturday night's game against LSU.
An Auburn spokesman said the 23-year-old Bagwell was in his first season as a student coach after working as a student trainer in 2011.
"I literally had dinner with him several weeks ago and he seemed fine, he always being a joker, always could put a smile on your face, make you laugh and I did not see that coming," said John Chappell, Friend of Bagwell.
"Good reports along the way he seemed to be doing really really well was loving his job as a trainer for auburn, he was really involved with athletics with huntsville high," said Mike Chappell, Huntsville High School teacher.
Coach Gene Chizik opened his postgame news conference by announcing Bagwell died "shortly before the game."
Chizik provided no details on the cause of Bagwell's death but said, "our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
