Report: Alabama remains one of top ten poorest states

An analysis of the most recent U.S. Census data by 24/7 Wall St is showing the poorest states based on median household income.

Nearly every state in the top ten poorest category is in the South.

In 2010 the State of Alabama was listed as the 9th poorest state. In 2011 it jumped to 5th poorest. The state's median income of $41,415 is said to be nearly $9,000 below the national average.

More than 19 percent of Alabamians are living below the poverty line. That makes the state's average the 7th highest in the nation.
