PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -
The Bizzy Bee Marathon gas station off 4th Avenue in Phenix City is picking up the pieces after a driver slammed his SUV into the building.
The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, just 15 minutes before the store closed down for the night.
Police say Randy Smith drove his 2000 Range Rover into the front of the building and was under the influence of alcohol and possibly a combination of drugs at the time.
Investigators say he had a tall beer, a regular beer and was on prescription medication at the time of the crash.
Witnesses say they saw his SUV slow down, speed back up, run in to the building, and then back up in to the parking lot.
Smith faces a DUI charge - other charges are being investigated at this time.
Manager, Patricia Nesbit, told News Leader 9 the driver is a regular customer.
She explained the physical damage caused by the crash is secondary to the emotional damage. "I've been here for six years and I built this store up with [my employees and I]. It just took five minutes for them to demolish it."
Police said one person was taken to the hospital, but no other injuries were reported.
