Alabama Wraps Up Practice Week; Jones Named Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy

Alabama and Mississippi are scheduled to kickoff at 8:15 p.m. Saturday on ESPN

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama football team practiced for 90 minutes in shells on Thursday inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility as they made final preparations for the SEC home opener against Mississippi.

The No. 1 Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0) welcomes the Rebels (3-1, 0-0 SEC) to Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday for an 8:15 p.m. kickoff that will be televised nationally on ESPN. Joe Tessitore and Matt Millen will call the action with Jessica Mendoza reporting from the sidelines.

"We have to be ready and execute our game plan," Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner said. "They (Mississippi) do a lot of different things and we always look forward to a challenge. They are one of the best teams we've played to this point in the season, and we have to try and be ready for it."

The Mississippi game marks the third of seven home games for the Crimson Tide in 2012. Alabama is 26-2 in their last 28 homes games and have won 10 straight games and 23-of-24 games against the Rebels in Tuscaloosa.

"It is going to be a loud stadium and I'm looking forward to it," Milliner said. "We are ready to come out and play competitively, so it should be a great game for the fans."

Alabama senior center Barrett Jones was named a semifinalist for the 2012 Campbell Trophy on Thursday. The William V. Campbell Trophy is awarded annually by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame to college football's "best and brightest."

Each semifinalist is nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each. The student-athlete must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Jones, a native of Germantown, Tenn., is finishing his master's degree in accounting this fall with a 4.0 GPA. He is a three-time Academic All-American in his fourth year as a starter after winning the 2011 Outland Trophy. The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 finalists and announce the results on Oct. 25. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2012 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The winner will be announced at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 in New York. The winner's scholarship will be increased to $25,000 and they will receive a 25-pound bronze trophy.
