AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The Auburn University Medical Clinic is at the center of a massive internal theft investigation.

Detectives confirmed that a former East Alabama Medical Center employee, 49-year-old Karen Wingard, was arrested and charged with first-degree theft after allegedly stealing about $100,000 while working on campus at the AU Medical Clinic.

Investigators are still working on an exact total at this time because it appears this alleged criminal activity had been happening for several years while Wingard was an employee at the on-campus clinic.

Wingard turned herself in Sunday. She was arrested, then posted bond on first-degree theft charges.

The investigation began when administrators at the Clinic called police about some suspicious activity.

"We received a call from the staff at AU Medical Center about the possibility of an employee stealing funds from the AU Medical Center," said Chief Tommy Dawson. "We began an investigation and believe it had been going on since 2009. We were able to make an arrest this past Sunday of a former employee of the clinic."

Dawson said the specifics on how police suspect Wingard diverted about the money from the clinic will probably come out at her preliminary hearing.

A spokesperson for East Alabama Medical Center, who oversees the AU Medical Clinic, told News Leader 9 that they are unable to comment because the arrest involves an ongoing police investigation.
