Tucson cat shelter gets reprieve from Pima County

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

Pima County Supervisors are letting a shelter for cats in the Tucson Mountains stay open despite complaints from nearby homeowners.

The problems for the Wee Care Companion Animal Shelter began earlier this year. That's when its director asked for an inspection so firefighters could become familiar with the layout of the old house now used by the shelter.

The Arizona Daily Star reports the inspector told shelter director Harold McGrogan his property had the wrong permits. The shelter has been open since July 2010.

A hearing officer denied a new permit, saying the shelter in a residential area was not a residence occupied by people after a dozen neighbors complained.

McGrogan appealed to supervisors, who voted 2-1 Tuesday to permit up to 24 cats in the house.
