HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

It's been almost one month since former governor Don Siegelman was sent back to prison.

Siegelman had been free while he appealed a bribery conviction, but just last month, a judge sentenced him to spend more than six years in prison for bribery and conspiracy charges.

"His spirit is broken," said daughter, Dana Siegelman.  "I mean he is devastated that it's come to this and that this has gone on so long, and he can't believe that he is back in prison."

Dana started an online petition hoping to make her father a free man. To date, the petition has more than 31,817 signatures.

"All of those people believe that a wrong has been done and that my dad, Don Siegelman, should be pardoned, exonerated, his sentence commuted - and he should be a free man," she said.

Dana said she's willing to take it all the way to the White House for President Barack Obama.

"We hope we can bring this to his attention immediately after the election. If for some reason the President doesn't pardon Dad, we will do everything we can to get a new trial," she said.

Siegelman was sent to serve his time at the Oakdale Federal Facility in Louisiana.  Once his time is up, he will spend three years on probation and be forced to pay a $50,000 fine.
