DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A DeKalb County girl lost her aunt to cancer, but she's hoping to give other cancer patients the strength to fight on.

Brittany Rigdon is only in the first grade, but so far, she's pulled $40 from her piggy bank for the local cancer center and is holding a fundraiser Saturday morning.

At the age of 6, Brittany lost her aunt Myriam Mathis earlier this year. She died as a result of a recurrence of breast cancer.

The loss was tough on Brittany.

Earlier this week, she used her pink gift pouches filled with candy and other items and took them to cancer patients at the local hospital in Fort Payne.  She also included a card that said, "I will fight this cancer with you. Love, Brittany."

But for Brittany, gifts were not enough so she's teamed up with family and friends to hold a fundraiser.

Brittany's neighbors and friends are making baked goods for that fundraiser that will be held at the Big Lots in Fort Payne Saturday morning.

Although it's been nine months since the passing of Brittany's aunt, the reason for the bake sale has not been forgotten.

"It's amazing.  She's a little child with a big heart - big heart," said Brittany's mom, Kathleen Schrader.

The fundraiser begins at 9 a.m.

All of the money raised will be given to the cancer center and DeKalb Regional Medical Center.
