BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A single-engine plane has crashed in Birmingham. The accident happened after noon on Saturday.
The plane landed in a field in front of The Furnace gentleman's club. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Chief C.W. Mardis says the pilot was trying to get to Birmingham to refuel when he started having visibility issues. Mardis says he made the decision to make an emergency landing at this point and that the plane was not out of fuel.
The plane was identified as a Cirrus SR22. It was able to deploy a parachute to allow the airframe to land safely. Mardis says the pilot made the right decision to use the parachute.
There was only the pilot and one passenger in the plane. The passenger was taken to UAB with minor, non-life threatening injuries. The pilot was uninjured.
Mardis says crews are on the scene working to clean up around 10 gallons of spilled fuel.
The pilot has not been identified, but Mardis says he is from Birmingham and was coming from Kansas City and was headed to Tampa, Florida.
