LAFAYETTE, AL (WTVM) -

Lafayette's Police Chief Kenneth Vines is calling this weekend's death tragic and thus far unexplained.

He says investigators are working to sort it all out, while the District Attorney will decide if charges need to be filed. 

"We just have a very bad situation. We are trying to get to the bottom of it," said Vines.

That bad situation began Saturday night around 10 p.m. when 37-year-old William Kevin Brown and his wife stopped by the Circle K on Lafayette Street. 

Chief Vines told News Leader 9 that we were not allowed to see the surveillance video from the gas station. The video allegedly shows Brown arguing then fighting with four men, including two teens.

Vines says police were called and spoke with Brown, who had an injured foot, but seemed to be okay and told police he did not want to file charges.

"He was fine, talked to the officers, did not want anything done and we told him he needed to go to the hospital," Vines said.

Brown was taken to EAMC via ambulance, where doctors confirmed he had a broken foot. However, Brown suddenly died Sunday morning just before foot surgery.

"We were told... it was possible he suffered a blood clot," Chief Vines said. "I also asked doctors if it was possible to get a blood clot from a broken injury and I was told yes." 

Detectives are now locating the men Brown fought with, while waiting on an autopsy to confirm an exact cause of death to see if it can be linked back to the fight.

"During the course of the investigation if we see charges need to be filed or an arrest needs to be made, we will do that," Vines said.

Chief Vines is asking for the community's patience as investigators work on the case.  

Vines says perhaps their best piece of evidence, the autopsy report, should be back on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. They will then meet with the DA to see if charges need to be filed.
