The attorney for the family of slain University of South Alabama student Gil Collar says they learned of the results of an autopsy not from the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, but from the media.

Collar family attorney Jere Beasley said the Beasley Allen Law Firm had requested the information from the investigation, including the surveillance video, but they had not been given access. The Collar family retained counsel over the weekend to conduct its own investigation.

Beasley said he was, "disappointed they would do this," adding that, "trying the case in the media is a mistake."

Beasley says his firm has requested a meeting with the district attorney's office, as late as today, and says requests have been denied.

"This is a disappointment to the family," Beasley said. "They still haven't answered the question why an armed security officer would shoot an unarmed child."

Revealed Tuesday as part of Collar's autopsy, law enforcement said in a news conference that the USA freshman was under the influence of LSD at the time a campus security guard fatally shot him.

They added that a video recording of a sequence of events would be made available to the Collar family for and members of the media for review, but it cannot be recorded and will not be available for viewing by the public.
