PELL CITY, AL (WBRC) -

A former Pell City schoolteacher was sentenced today for rape. Heather Whitten, formerly a 5th grade teacher at Williams Intermediate School, was indicted on three counts of second degree sexual abuse for having sexual relations with a boy who was between the ages of 12 and 16.

Whitten was arrested in February on the charge of second degree rape. Today Judge Jim Hill sentenced Whitten to a year and a day in prison. She'll spend the rest of her five year split sentence on supervised probation.

Whitten resigned from her job teaching math and reading at Williams Intermediate School after her arrest. She pleaded guilty to the charge of rape.

At today's hearing, her brother and a longtime family friend testified on her behalf, saying she was compassionate and cared about children, and was active in her church and the incidents were out of character for her.

Prosecutors say Whitten's sexual relationship with the 14-year-old happened during and after the time she had legal custody of the young man. She had met him as school but wasn't his teacher.

Whitten is expected to report to Tutwiler prison Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
