MONTGOMERY, AL -
The Alabama State football team had its final full workout before Saturday's 1 p.m. showdown against the visiting Jackson State Tigers at Cramton Bowl. The contest can be heard on WVAS 90.7 FM and can be watched online via www.bamastatesports.com.
The Hornets focused mostly on the intangibles like special teams and personnel assignments.
"It's always a red zone day, where we shorten the field down to make sure we're getting in the work we need offensively and defensively," head coach Reggie Barlow said. "There's a lot of special team work that we do. For the most part the guys looked dialed in and focused to get what we needed to get done."
ASU has run the ball a total of 106 times and has accounted for an average of 274.5 rushing yards in their past two victories. Alabama State leads the conference in scoring offense with 28 touchdowns and in rushing offense with a total of 1,150 yards on 246 carries.
"Sometimes, you have to adapt your philosophy to your team and put them in situations to make plays and that's what we've tried doing over the last couple of games," said Barlow. "Offensively, our tempo has to be our winning edge. Sometimes, you may be playing against a team much bigger than you are, so you have to beat them with speed and endurance and that's one of things that we have to try to do to overcome a good Jackson State team."
The game is part of the Think Pink Weekend. Friday the Hornet Madness Fan Fest begins at 4 p.m. at the soccer field with music and free food as fans get to meet the Alabama State basketball and bowling teams. At 7 p.m. the ASU soccer team takes on defending champions Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a match that will be video streamed online at bamastatesports.com. Following Saturday's football game, the Lady Hornets volleyball team will face Cal State-Bakersfield at 7 p.m. at Lockhart Gym. The weekend culminates on Sunday with the volleyball team again facing Cal State-Bakersfield at 1 p.m. and soccer facing Grambling also at 1 p.m.
