Co-conspirator charged in 91-year-old Ala. mayor's theft case

RIVER FALLS, AL (WSFA) -

The man who lived with a 91-year-old Alabama town mayor who pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing more than $200,000 in public funds is now facing his own charges. Richard Moss, 47, was arrested Thursday and charged as a co-conspirator to Mayor Mary Hixon's crimes.

Moss was paid more than $80,000 by Hixon for serving as a night policeman with the south Alabama town, as well as a repair worker. Authorities say he didn't do either job.

District Attorney Walt Merrell said despite living at the same address, Hixon's and Moss' relationship was not romantic. He described the relationship as Hixon being like a grandmother to the man's children.

Hixon resigned her position of more than 30 years as mayor of the town of about 500. She will be required to repay the money that was taken, though she will not face jailtime due to her age.

No additional information was immediately known regarding Moss' case.
