Kent University School of Biosciences professor discovers method that allows them to study how vitamin b12 is made in cells.
Largo, FL (PRWEB) October 14, 2012
Vitamin b12 is an essential vitamin that the body cannot produce on its own. Subsequently many people are at risk for a vitamin b12 deficiency, particularly if they are on a vegetarian diet or if they have a condition which prevents them from digesting the vitamin when it is consumed. B12 is known to assists in the formation of red blood cells, help with metabolism, anemia treatment, memory loss and offers many more benefits. If not consumed in diet the vitamin is often supplemented orally or via b12 injections.
Professor Martin Warren of Kent Universities School of Biosciences has discovered a way to examine how b12 is made and alter some of the properties of the vitamin. By using a synthetic biology technique Professor Warren engineered a conveyer belt of molecular machines for the construction of b12 inside of bacteria.
Professor Warren says “This is a really important step forward. Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that is only made by bacteria and is not present in plants. Therefore a significant proportion of the world's population, including vegetarians, are at risk of B12 deficiency.”
In addition to this revelation Professor Warren and the research team learned that they were able to alter the form that the vitamin is made.
The team at Kent University is hopeful that the technology will allow them to produce alternate forms of vitamin b12 which may lead to effective treatments of infections, tuberculosis (TB) and cancer.
