COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

It was two months ago that a teenager from our area was involved in a horrible car accident that put her in a coma where she remains today. On Sunday, a musical benefit was held in her honor.

Brittany Meredith is loved by many at Hardaway High School in Columbus where she was a 2011 graduate.  She competed on the dance team, volunteered that the Boys and Girls Club, and was voted homecoming queen her senior year.  Performers from the community played music, sang songs, and spoke highly of her to a packed auditorium, but she wasn't there to see it.

"I would just like to thank her family for letting us borrow Brittany for four years and she's so wonderful.  We would not have been one of the best classes to graduate Hardaway High School without her," said classmate, Chris Hawkins.

Brittany was accepted to the University of West Georgia and was beginning to realize her bright future when it was unexpectedly placed on hold.  She was on her way to a job interview in Douglasville when her car blew a tire.  Another driver did not see her stopped in the road and hit the car from behind.  That accident sent her to a bed in the Atlanta Medical Center where she's been ever since.

Brittany's mother, Shalina Meredith, said, "She has left side brain injury and as the doctor said, it's just a day-by-day process. So, right now we're not sure where it's going.  We're just constantly praying, but she's still in a comatose state."

Doctors said her condition has become more stable and now she is breathing on her own.  Before her accident, Brittany said she wanted to become a sportscaster.  Her supporters know that one day she will wake up from her sleep and eventually realize that dream.  Until then, her mother will be by her side, praying that the day comes soon.
