Ala. Democrat Party's future hinges on 74-year-old

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Democrat Lucy Baxley and Republican Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh are battling each other again for Public Service Commission president - only this time the outcome could relegate the Alabama Democratic Party to minor party status.

The 74-year-old Baxley is the only Democrat currently holding a statewide office in Alabama. She says she feels like a target for Republicans who want revenge for the years that Democrats controlled state government.

Her 46-year-old opponent says the PSC needs a president who will be at work every day and not sit on the sidelines.

Cavanaugh narrowly lost to Baxley in 2008. Then she won a seat on the PSC in 2010 by beating Jan Cook, who was the longest-serving Democrat in statewide office.
