GERVAIS, OR (KPTV) -
Oregon's largest pumpkin ever is gaining worldwide recognition. Now it's in New York City.
Steve Daletas of Gervais grew the seventh biggest pumpkin ever recorded in the world.
At 1778.5 pounds, the giant pumpkin weighs more than some cars.
"They're bred to grow big," says Daletas, "Now there are some things you got to do to get them that way. The genetics are there to grow big. We do everything to cross-pollinate the characteristics in to make them bigger, thicker and heavier."
He also credits a great year of weather.
The pumpkin flew to New York on Tuesday. It will be carved on Friday at Grand Central Station.
Then, it will go on display in the New York Botanical Gardens.
