Prattville requests authority for draft beer sales

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

The Prattville City Council has formally asked the legislature to give the city authority to enable draft bill sales within the city limits.  Legislators have assured city leaders they will draft a bill in the upcoming session.

Local bars and restaurants said the change could lead to a boost in business.

"We're right on the interstate, a great traveling point, where people stop off and ask us why we don't have draft beer here," said Jay Blanchard, General Manager of the Jim and Nick's in Prattville.

"We've had several restaurants express interest in the city of Prattville, but they have declined to come at this time because of the draft beer sales," said Council Member Nathan Fank, who sponsored the resolution.

Rep. Paul Beckman said he would sponsor a similar bill to the one in the previous session.

"I've been assured that everybody, if it's the same bill will basically sign off on it," Beckman said.

The council also voted to override the Mayor Bill Gillespie's veto of the sales tax extension.  The extension keeps a one percent increase of the tax in place until 2031.  The 1% tax is intended to help pay off the city's debt and also put some funds in reserve.  The Mayor said he respected the council's decision.

It was the last council meeting for Mike Renegar, Nathan Fank and Dr. Tom Miller.  The new council will convene in two weeks.
