Chambers County Drug Task Force working I-85 looking for drugs

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

The Chambers County Drug Task Force has been working Interstate 85 up and down.

Lee County narcotics agents are joining in on a multi-jurisdictional fight against the illegal import and transport of drugs being funneled into local neighborhoods from Texas and Mexico drug makers.

Chambers County drug task force agents have been hitting Interstate 85 hard, seizing more than 20 pounds in marijuana as well as several other drugs.

"We also got a little less than 3 1/2 pounds of coke, 8 1/2 ounces of ice or meth, 2 1/2 ounces of Xtasy. We found $19,000 in cash and we seized three vehicles," explained task force commander Johnny Wood.

In three months, agents have arrested 14 individuals for trafficking. Some transport the drugs in bags or suitcases. Others try and get creative.

"They try and get crafty there are body shops they will take their vehicle to have hidden compartments or trap doors where you have to have the heater on or the radio tuned into a certain frequency and beep the horn before it will open," Wood said.

Lee and Chambers County K9s are pulled in to help locate the hidden drugs.
Commander Wood says successful highway interdiction is a talent developed over years of training.

Agents are taught to look for red flags and use their instincts and it appears to be working in Chambers County.

The following subjects were arrested and charged:

1. Michael Landon Anderson, Jr, 28 of Montgomery, Trafficking in Marijuana.
