HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville Police arrested a man on child abuse charges after police said the victim was beaten for receiving a bad grade.
Arnold Hines was arrested Wednesday after police said he used excessive force on his girlfriend's child when the child received a bad grade on school work.
Police said the alleged abuse was first reported by the victim's teacher.
They said the teacher noticed the child had bruises and reported it to the school.
The school then contacted DHR.
The guidance counselor coordinator for Huntsville City Schools could not speak specifically to this case, but she said schools play a vital role in reporting child abuse.
"All school employees from cafeteria workers, to custodians, to teachers, to administrators are court mandated reporters. That means if we suspect child abuse, we are required by law to report it. We don't need to do an investigation. We don't need to ask any questions. The only thing you need is a suspicion," said Donna Clark, counselor coordinator.
Police said the victim had bruising on the right side of the head, upper torso and thigh.
Hines was charged with aggravated child abuse. His bond has not been set.
