HACKLEBURG, AL (WAFF) -
Kyle Camp, who has Down syndrome, got lost near his Hackleburg home Tuesday night. Rescue crews carried Kyle out of the woods, where he stayed warm overnight by cuddling his puppies.
It was the puppies' mother that helped lead rescuers to the lost child.
"It's the most happy feeling in the world, just realizing that I just got a little tiny taste of what so many parents have went through," said Kyle's mother, Rosemarie Camp. "I'm just so fortunate."
Camp is holding on to her son a little tighter now after the 10-year-old walked away from the family's home and got lost in the woods.
"It was getting dark and we were just scared because he doesn't ever go anywhere we can't see him," explained Camp.
Kyle spent the night in the woods, wet and without shoes or a jacket. But he wasn't alone. He was surrounded by four puppies that also turned up missing the same time Kyle did.
After nearly 15 hours in the woods, Kyle and the puppies were found.
"That's when I lost it," Kyle's mother said.
It was a moment his mother said she will never forget.
"He's really heavy and I felt like I could carry him for a hundred miles," she said. "It's indescribable how happy, how lucky [we are]."
Rosemarie said her family is forever grateful to the more than 100 people who helped search for Kyle.
"We're just so thankful and lucky to live in a place where you have such wonderful neighbors," Camp said.
On Thursday, Kyle was given a special device, called Project Lifesaver, designed to help track people who have a tendency to wander.
