BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Senator Jeff Sessions says he hopes the Supreme Court will review Alabama's immigration law and give the state more power to enforce some of the more controversial parts of that law.
Sessions was in Birmingham today and told Fox 6 News he doesn't know if the state will appeal yesterday's ruling by an appeals court in Atlanta that declined to re-examine the case.
Opponents of the law, including the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, say they welcomed yesterday's ruling.
"Alabama's was more far-reaching than Arizona's so we hope if this makes it to the Supreme Court, then those pieces will remain blocked," Isabel Rubio with HICA said.
Sessions says he believes the Supreme Court has gone too far.
"I believe Arizona had more powers within their state's authority than the Supreme Court gave them, even though they upheld a good deal of the Arizona law, and upheld a lot of Alabama law. But I do think the court's gone too far in that regard," Sessions said.
The appeals court hasn't ruled yet on a request for rehearing in a separate challenge to the law.
