COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
Jaquess Harris, 26, had a voice that family members say could soothe the soul.
Jacqueline Harris says her daughter moved to Georgia with hopes of getting signed to a record label. She spent countless hours in the studio recording music.
Her mother says she last spoke with her daughter a couple of hours before she went to a party, encouraging her daughter to follow in her footsteps.
"I told her I wanted her to finish what I didn't finish doing, I told her I want you to sing. She said okay," Jacqueline Harris said.
After Saturday night that promise to her mother to finish a career in music would not be fulfilled. Jaquess Harris was hit by Columbus police cruiser and killed. Columbus police Chief Ricky Boren says the officer was on his way to a backup call.
The officer was placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Meantime, family and friends are finding it hard to cope with the loss of a young woman they describe as a sweet kind hearted person.
"I always taught her to love everybody no matter what and sometimes she would say she was too nice and she would say she get it from me. Both of the twins all of my kids, I call them my angels. I told them I don't care if I got 60 years old those are my babies," Harris said.
Though one of her babies is gone, Jacqueline knows that her daughter is in a better place now. She says she turns to God for peace of mind knowing Jaquess is with Him now.
The Harris family is taking donations to help with funeral expenses. You can go to any SunTrust location and ask to donate in the account fund for Jaquess Harris. The funeral will take place in Harris' hometown of Detroit.
