Project Cemetery: restoring Montgomery's west side cemeteries

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

"Now here's another grave that is open and it's been open for quite sometime and it's filled with water," Montgomery resident Jimmie McFarland said.

McFarland says this is embarrassing to the west side area of Montgomery.

"And this has been going on for years and I've been trying to get something done about this as a concerned citizen of the neighborhood," McFarland said.

Broken vaults are visible from the street and you can see overgrown grass and trash around the tombstones. McFarland says it saddens his heart to see the graves of people's loved ones in deplorable conditions.

"This is totally uncalled for; to see our loved ones in such a dilapidated and undignified condition on their way to heaven," McFarland said.

And that's why he has decided to start Project Cemetery. The project will run totally on donations and grants. McFarland is seeking financial help from the public in order to clean and restore grave sites on the west side.

"We're going to make sure the proper authorities is going to step up to the plate and help us do this legally and bring the cemeteries up to an acceptable standard," McFarland said.

So that people's loved ones can continue to rest in peace.

Donations can be made at any Regions Bank, just ask for Project Cemetery.
