Tattoos are no longer simply the stamp of the rebellious. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, forty percent of Americans age 26 to 40 have at least one tattoo.
And it's a one and a half billion dollar industry.
But there is, according to Dermatologist Dr. Tim Chang, if you don't go to a shop on the up and up, some risk of tetanus and hepatitis.
"Tetanus can be life threatening if you didn't have the vaccination and Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can lead to liver failure and liver cancer, so they can be quite serious," said Dr. Chang.
But even if you do decide to get a tattoo, it is very important that you take extra precaution during the healing process.
"You could be more pre-disposed to getting infections and other complications from getting sun exposure to an area of the skin that's been injured," said Dr. Chang.
Dr. Chang advises that after you get the ink, you should keep it under wraps. "You probably want to keep it covered away from the sun for at least two weeks until the skin is completely healed."
Your health is priority one, but the sun can also damage your final look.
