DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -
The Dothan Police Department is becoming more technologically advanced. The agency can now receive crime tips through a mobile app or even a simple text.
Police say it is completely secure and each tipster remains anonymous. The app is called Tipsubmit Mobile and is available for both the iPhone and the Android smart phones.
Once you download the app, you can choose the Dothan area CrimeStoppers as the agency.
On the tip form you can enter the type of offense, give a description of suspect or vehicle, and even enter the description of the crime.
If you don't have the ability to use the app, you can always just text a tip. Text the number 2-7-4-6-3-7, which spells out CRIMES.
Then make sure in the message put DACS, which stands for Dothan Area CrimeStoppers, that way the right agency will get the message.
Once you've entered that, you can put as much information about the crime as you would like.
Police believe having this capability will help cut down on time and will hopefully get the information they need rolling in.
"We currently don't get as many tips as we would like to and mainly because tipsters are concerned about being found out," said CPL. RaeMonica Carney with the Dothan Police Department. "This will double the amount of information we get on crimes that have occurred."
Now anyone that submits a tip does have the option to keep the line of communication open. It allows police to contact the tipster if they need more information, but they add tipsters will remain anonymous.
The Dothan area CrimeStoppers includes more than just the Dothan Police Department. Houston County Sheriff's Office, Headland Police Department, and Abbeville Police Department area are also involved.
So, if you have tips for those agencies, you submit it the exact same way.
