BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A Democratic icon made its way to Birmingham. "Irene, the official Democratic donkey" hung out at Birmingham's city hall yesterday afternoon.
Irene's handler, Willie Kirk, of Little Texas, Alabama, says she has been in three inaugural parades: two for President Clinton and one for President Obama. Irene also went to an inaugural ball in 2008 in a gown from Bloomingdale's.
When asked how old Irene is, Kirk just said she's "old enough to vote."
She's been around for many, many years and I'm 80-years-old and I was born a Democrat. I'm a democrat now and they gonna bury me and Irene over there in Little Texas with all the other Democrats," said Kirk.
Willie Kirk says Irene is the only donkey to ever spend a night in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
