A group called the Nonhuman Rights Project is taking the fight against animal cruelty to a new level.

It is filing lawsuits around the country, hoping a court will recognize an animal can be a legal "person" in the eyes of the law.

The director, a man named Steven Wise, has compared animals to human slaves in 18th century England, saying they are invisible to the legal system.

He is hoping a judge somewhere will recognize an animal's right to liberty and integrity.
