BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Christmas came early for UAB's School of Nursing this week after they received word that they would receive $3.1 million in federal grants.
The money will fund four programs: the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program, the Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Program, Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program.
These programs are designed not only to help students pursuing a Master's Degree in nursing, but will help ease an expected shortage of educators who teach nursing in Alabama.
A recent survey by the Alabama Board of Nursing found that 40 percent of the state's nursing teachers are retiring within the next four to nine years.
