COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
A Columbus police officer was threatened by a man wielding a sledgehammer. The incident occurred at a home located on Smith Road around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said they had received a tip about suspicious activity at that address and found Kenneth Hendricks, 43, standing near his pickup truck in a driveway.
According to police, Hendricks yelled, "Come get me!" many times. Police said he behaved very aggressively, pounded on his truck, pulled clothes out of the vehicle and threw them on the ground. He finally grabbed an object and approached officers with it behind his back. Police said he then raised the item over his head, which they could now see was a sledgehammer, and charged the officers.
Police had to deploy a Taser device to subdue Hedricks. No officer was hit with the sledgehammer.
Hendricks was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
