Alabama West Nile cases up to 41

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Cases of West Nile Virus in Alabama now stand at 41 as of October 30, 2012. That's according to data collected by the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Geological Survey.

Nationwide, there have been 4,891 reported cases of the virus with the highest number of cases happening in Texas with 1,665.

Montgomery County remains the most affected county in Alabama with a total of 9 confirmed cases. Mobile County is close behind with 8 cases. Other counties reporting multiple cases include Baldwin, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties with 5, 4 and 2 cases respectively.

Coffee, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Escambia, Geneva, Houston, Lauderdale, Madison, Marengo, Perry, Wilcox and Winston counties each report 1 case of the virus.

August was the peak month of infections with numbers dropping off through October.

WNV is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites and is not contagious from person to person. Most WNV infected humans have no symptoms, but a small proportion develops mild symptoms that include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands.

Less than 1 percent of infected people develop severe illness.
