MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
An internal investigation regarding inmate contraband and operations of the Montgomery City Jail is nearing a close, according to city spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt.
The probe started in July and resulted in three MPD employees' resignations, the re-assignment of the jail warden and additional charges against two inmates, one a federal inmate.
The probe prompted the federal government to pull its inmates out of the city's jail, and as of October 31, they have not been returned to the facility. Chief Kevin Murphy said early in the investigation that, "We are focusing on what appears to be a degradation of safety protocols that extends beyond the initial allegations."
After re-assigning the jail warden, Chief Murphy named an acting jail warden, Capt. Brenda Gooden, who had been serving as a Patrol Division precinct commander.
Earnhardt said Director Chris Murphy and Chief Kevin Murphy are meeting with U.S. Marshal Art Baylor Thursday for a final review.
Earnhardt said a comprehensive briefing is being put together for next week in which the department should discuss the conclusion of the investigation.
