The University of Alabama will have to start the process of finding a new president again just months after selecting its current leader, Guy Bailey. Bailey announced his resignation Wednesday citing a focus on his wife's health as the reason.

"This is a decision my wife Jan and I made together after much discussion about how we can best address her health, which is the most important priority in our lives," Bailey wrote in a statement. "By announcing this decision today, I hope the Board of Trustees will be in a position to take the next appropriate steps during its meeting in Tuscaloosa this week."

Bailey added thanks to U of A faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Bryant, Jr., President Pro Tempore of The University of Alabama Board of Trustees and Dr. Robert Witt, Chancellor of the University of Alabama both reacted by saying the Bailey family was in their prayers.

Bailey's tenure as President of the University of Alabama was short, only being announced in July.  He was most recently the President of Texas Tech, holding that job since 2008.

He is a two-time graduate of the University of Alabama and is originally from Montgomery.

Bryant said the issue of presidential succession will be handled in a specially called Board meeting Thursday.
