MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Mesa police said a house fire Wednesday night was started by a man whose clothes caught fire while he siphoned gas and later jumped from his truck before it crashed into the residence.

A police spokesman said Herbert C. Ridge, 37, is believed to have tried to steal gas before he caught fire and then drove away. The flames forced him to leap from his truck and it continued driverless into the driveway of a residence near Horne and University Drive, sparking the house fire.

Witnesses told officers the general direction the driver fled, and police found Ridge at 9913 E. Main St.

Ridge was taken to the Maricopa County Burn Unit with a broken arm and burns, police said.

He could face charges of theft, driving under the influence, felony criminal damage and possession of dangerous drugs upon his release from the hospital, police said.
