TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
A man accused of firing a gun while inside a fraternity house at the University of Alabama was taken into custody by Tuscaloosa police on Tuesday. He now faces charges of attempted murder and assault.
Police say the man, identified as 61-year-old Eugene Kelly, is also a suspect in a stabbing that happened off-campus. Police say no UA students were involved or injured in the incidents.
At 11:09 a.m., the University of Alabama Police Department received calls reporting an altercation at the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house. When officers arrived at the scene, they found that two family members who work for the fraternity got into an altercation that ended with Kelly allegedly firing a shot at the other. Police say Kelly then fled the scene.
About five minutes after the incident at the fraternity house, Tuscaloosa Police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 1100 block of E. 22nd Avenue.
Police say Kelly went inside a residence and got into an altercation with a 28-year-old female. Kelly allegedly stabbed the female, who police say had a relationship with Kelly's son.
Police say Kelly then fled the scene in his vehicle and wrecked on University Blvd. at the viaduct over Kicker Road. Witnesses told police he attempted to jump off the bridge, but bystanders held him down until police officer arrived on scene.
TPD officers took Kelly into custody at the bridge. He was transported to DCH for treatment for injuries he sustained in the car crash. After Kelly was in custody, UAPD got in touch with TPD about the incident at the fraternity house. Police say Kelly is a suspect in both altercations.
The female victim who was reportedly stabbed was also taken to DCH for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Brent Blankley with Tuscaloosa police.
Kelly has been charged with two counts of
attempted murder and one count of second degree assault, according to the
Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Each murder charge has a $75,000 bond. His assault charge has a bond of $5,000.
