Update: Child and father die after being hit by a car

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County deputies have identified the father and child killed after being hit by a car near the Pinson Valley High School stadium.

The incident happened on Highway 75 about 9:10 p.m. Friday night.

Police say 59-year-old Walter Smith and his two-year-old son Noah were attempting to cross the highway to where their car was parked. They were stuck by a motorist who did not see them.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian says Noah Smith was taken to St. Vincent's East hospital where he was pronounced dead. Walter Smith was airlifted to UAB where he died Saturday morning.

The 60-year-old driver was not injured. The accident remains under investigation and deputies say the driver is cooperating.
