FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -
Authorities will start an experiment Sunday night in building beaches and sandbars on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon when they release a heavy flow of water.
The Arizona Daily Sun reports that the plan will start out of Glen Canyon Dam and ultimately release about five times more water than normally comes out of the dam for about two days.
Flows are expected to return to normal by Nov. 23.
Most of the sand that once flowed into the canyon is now trapped upstream of Glen Canyon Dam, and a few tributaries are now the only sources.
That gives boaters fewer beaches on which to camp, and it might also be important to endangered fish that spawn in pockets of calmer water created by sandbars.
