The senior member of the Alabama Legislature says Republican Speaker Mike Hubbard of Auburn has broken his own ban on out-of-state and some in-state travel for lawmakers by approving a little over $7,500 in travel expenses for 28 legislators.
Democratic Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery cited figures from the state comptroller and said Hubbard had violated his promise to slash travel expenses between June 8 and Sept. 30.
Holmes made the statement at a news conference Thursday in his Montgomery office.
Hubbard disputed the figures and said his office has approved no out-of-state travel since the ban started.
He said some of the payments cited by Holmes were for out-of-state trips made before the ban started and others were in-state trips authorized by state law.
"This news conference insults the intelligence of Alabama's citizens and smacks of the politics of the past that voters here have rejected," Hubbard said.
